How much does electricity cost in Mexico? CFE residential rates
Updated October 24, 2026
Price per kWh in October 2026 (rate 1, with VAT, MXN)
- Basic (first 75 kWh of the month): $1.32 per kWh
- Intermediate (up to 140 kWh): $1.61 per kWh
- Excess (above 140): $4.70 per kWh
- DAC rate (high consumption): $6.52 to $8.27 per kWh, plus a fixed charge
100 kWh on a two-month rate-1 bill cost about $132 MXN; 100 kWh in a single month, about $139 MXN (with VAT, without the street-lighting fee).
CFE doesn't charge homes a single price for electricity. Each residential rate splits the month's usage into tiers: the first kWh (the basic tier, “básico”) are the cheapest because they're subsidized, and the last ones (the excess tier, “excedente”) cost more than three times as much.
Why are there so many rates?
The rate depends on your town's climate: rate 1 is for mild places and 1A to 1F for increasingly hot ones, where air conditioning is a necessity. The hotter the rate, the more cheap kWh you get in summer, which CFE defines as the six hottest consecutive months of the year in your town. Your rate is printed on your bill next to “Tarifa”.

How your bill is calculated
Example on rate 1, with 200 kWh in a month: the first 75 are charged at $1.140, the next 65 (up to 140) at $1.385 and the last 60 at $4.054. That's why the last kWh you use are the most expensive: turning off an appliance lowers the bill more than you'd think.
And if your 12-month average goes over your rate's limit, CFE moves you to the DAC rate, where every kWh costs between $5.62 and $7.13 (before VAT).
